User's Review: Bruckner Symphony No. 9 Norrington Thankfully, there appear to be fewer editions of Bruckner's Ninth Symphony than his other symphonies, which should make it comparisons easier. Apart from a few versions, almost all offer the 1894 version of this symphony with only the first three movements, because Bruckner left only sketches for the finale. There are, however, several editions, including those by L. Nowak, A. Orel, and B. Cohrs... Read more |

User's Review: Copland - an American Dvorak? Listening to this album gives me a kind of "déjà vu" feeling - you have "seen" or imagined through listening this scenery before. Where? Yes, Dvorak's From the New World. The music is classic in style and pictures mighty sceneries: you see the Great Plains and hear tones of folk music. The music would fit very well as monumental film music... Read more |

User's Review: Rach III I downloaded this CD 'cause Chandos records are generally vividly performed and this one is no exception. I have always liked listening to Rachmaninov. The BBC Philharmonic is a very good orchestra, so thrilling. It is also recorded at 24 bit/96 Khz (max quality). I can describe the sound as bright and not dry. I do not like very old recordings with a dry sound. Music must fly through the concert hall and with this CD it seriously happens... Read more |

User's Review: Verdi’s Sicilian Vespers I Vespri Siciliani is not one of Verdi’s most popular works. It belongs to the same category of dark operas in which Simon Boccanegra, another subtle masterpiece, is also found. The subject matter of both derives from the violent history of medieval Italy... User's Review: Mozart's Last Quartets I know Mozart's Haydn Quartets well. But have never heard these quartets before. I know there is a consensus that the last four quartets Mozart wrote, the Hofmeister Quartet and these three works, are not as deep. On first hearing this disc, I tended to agree with that view. Perhaps repeated hearing will modify it. (And, slightly less deep Mozart is still pretty deep)... Read more

User's Review: Good English version This is a highly recommendable version of Bach's St. Matthew Passion sung in English. This is an authentic performance in the sense that it sounds like a high quality performance given by a chorale group in a British church or cathedral. The soloists handle their vocal lines well and sing in clear English. The choir and orchestra are well rehearsed... Read more |

User's Review: Aggressive Shostakovich I am always curious to find out what a talented player finds in Shostakovich and is able to bring out, and in that respect Johannes Moser has something that he definitely wants you to hear. The first movement of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 is aggressive right from the beginning... the speed and attack of Mr. Moser on the cello is at first unsettling, but upon a second hearing adds a gripping tension to the underlying march music that is central to the movement...
