User's Review (by Peter Boswell): MOZART SYMPHONIES 34 AND 38 - CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - CONDUCTOR RAFAEL KUBELIK  Rafael Kubelik was conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra between 1950 and 1953. He was followed by the great Fritz Reiner who made the orchestra into one of the greatest orchestras in the world... Read more

Recorder Concertos: Petri, Michala - TANG, Jianping / SHENG, Bright / MA, Shui-Long / CHEN, Yi (Chinese Recorder Concertos)

Published Review (by Michael Church, BBC Music Magazine): This is not the first Chinese collaboration by the Danish recorder virtuoso Michala Petri, but it's the most interesting yet. Inspired by their country's rich variety of flute traditions, these four concertos reflect the way China's composers are melding their musical heritage with the symphonic one of Western Europe and America. And they also reflect the thoroughness with which Chinese composers have transcended the privations of those terrible years when they were condemned to hard labour in the countryside... Read more

User's Review: Ezio Pinza  I was first introduced to Ezio Pinza on my father's old wind-up gramophone from his collection of 78rpm discs. This was also my introduction to many famous arias and classical pieces - particularly those from Mozart (even if Pinza did sing them in Italian rather than German). I was overcome with nostalgia upon hearing this album - even though it has been cleaned up, you can still hear some of the background noise! I haven't heard Ezio Pinza for many years, and it was wonderful being reintroduced to his wonderful bass voice... Read more

Published Review (by Hubert Culot, MusicWeb International): Rautavaara’s first opera Kaivos (“The Mine”) had a rather long and chequered genesis. The composer began thinking about it in 1957 when he heard a story about miners besieged in the mine where they worked, trapped in the depths of the earth. Some time later when the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation launched an opera competition Rautavaara recalled the story of the rebellious miners and set to work writing his own libretto—something he was to do for all his later operas. The bulk of the composition was done in the late fifties and early sixties... Read more

User's Review: Wonderful, crisp orchestration and a masterful recording  I had listened to five and thirteen before this recording, so I was well prepared. I had never heard Norrkoping before, but had listened to Segerstam's Rautavaara symphonies before, and for me he is a superb director. I had no idea of the treat that I was in for. Most of Pettersson's symphonies are on one huge canvass. The eight is different - it is in two parts... Read more

User's Review: Magical first note drew me in  The lovely woman who shares her life with me has one minor flaw: She's a big fan of Nat King Cole. And as we cannot often prevent to be influenced by those who are close to our heart, I must say, even though I don't share that interest of hers, at some points I can understand it... Read more

KARLOWICZ, M.: Serenade / Violin Concerto (Kaler, Warsaw Philharmonic, Wit)

Published Review (by David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com): Karłowicz’s death in 1909, at age 33, was a serious loss to Polish music. His single Violin Concerto (1902) is as beautiful a work in the romantic style as any of the period, and Ilya Kaler plays it very well. Apart from a slightly grainy tone under pressure, he masters the technical difficulties pretty much effortlessly, and closes the slow movement with an absolutely exquisite diminuendo... Read more
