User's Review: Mahler 2nd Symphony, Jurowski & LPO I first looked for the set on ClassicsOnline because there was no CD available in the USA at the time. The recording had been awarded Record of the Month in the August 2011 in Gramophone Magazine (UK). My download from ClassicsOnline came in at 320 kbps, the largest bit rate available for mp3. But when I listened I was astounded at the sound quality. I use an iPod and expensive headphones so that my family doesn't have to suffer for my extreme tastes (i.e. all classical music)!... User's Review: Quietly exhilarating Phillip Schroeder’s latest recording is aptly named, as it does have a pronounced dreamlike quality. Most will probably label this music ambient for its minimalist orientation, and while the five compositions are introspective and contemplative, they are also surprisingly complex and expansive... User's Review: Hunting for Treasure I listened to every recording I could find of Rachmaninov and then if found Henri Sigfridsson's remarkable reading. Individually, the movements are exquisitely phrased and executed but the inspiring gift is that each movement is also made to be an understandable part of the whole. The effect is, on the one hand, mesmerizing and on the other astonishing. His understanding of the piece is as though a light were shone from within it. He deserves the widest possible public. |

User's Review (by Ted Wilks): An unexpected pleasure Apart from Leonard Bernstein and Gustav Mahler, who were equally famous for both composing and conducting, internationally known music maestros who also composed are relatively few; examples are Wilhelm Furtwangler, Igor Markevitch, Evgeni Svetlanov, and Bruno Walter. In his lifetime, Franco Ferrara, one of Italy's most renowned 20th Century conductors, tutored over 600 students, including many who subsequently became famous conductors... Read more |

User's Review: A Real Find This disc is a bit of a find, there isn’t much information about Josef Schelb (1894-1977) but someone who wrote both a Bass Clarinet Concerto and and Cor Anglais Concerto needs investigation... On the evidence of this disc, Schelb was a composer who wrote in a traditional, but brought-up-to-date style, more neo-classical than neo-Romantic. The mood is stern and sometimes grim, but hopeful; there is plenty of dissonance, but a good sense of musical movement means this is heard as necessary... Read more

User's Review: A Contemporary Choral Delight After several months of relishing the works of Whitacre and Lauridsen, my appetite for contemporary choral works has grown - I knew I had to get more. Getting this album was initially pretty much a gamble as I have no knowledge of Mr. Moran. This turned out to be a happy experiment! The Trinity Requiem is a mighty piece with a powerful organ and ensemble backing the haunting voices of the Trinity Youth Choir. The piece ranges from the mysterious Kyrie to the ringing Pie Jesu... User's Review: Hummel Piano Works For a long time I have been looking for a recording of Hummel piano etudes. The one I have just got is excellent. Danielle Laval is an exquisite pianist and she plays these very difficult etudes with astonishing lightness. However I must say that the most interesting piece of this record is Sonata... Read more |
