BRAHMS: Symphony No. 2 / Hungarian Dances

Published Review (Penguin Guide): In its glowing warmth Marin Alsop’s Brahms Second makes a strong contrast with her account of the First. She conveys her obvious affection for the work in the way she lyricizes the lower strings, with the central movements particularly mellow. The oboe tune in the Allegretto grazioso is delicate (Beecham used to do it that way). But the finale brings a satisfying conclusion. The Hungarian Dances (in varied orchestrations) offer an attractive bonus.

VIVALDI: 12 Sonatas for Violin and Continuo, Op. 2

User's Review: Very good  Very advisable to listen to. The early works composed by Vivaldi are full of content, flavor and harmony. The Op. 2 sonatas, published before his first concerti sets for violins - L'Estro Armonico and La Stravaganza - have a strong venetian influence, somehow dark, compact, rigid, and conservative. I believe Vivaldi intended Op. 2 to be a standard for violin sonatas, also a response to Op. 5 by Corelli... Read more

User's Review: Prokofiev interpretation has entered its age of enlightenment  This is a very fascinating account of Prokofiev's first 5 sonatas, positioning itself among the very top of what is available on the market. Alexandra Silocea's approach is rooted in an exceptionally refined musicianship of the highest level. Her playing is characterised b crystal clear articulation, careful phrasing, a broad scope of colours and dynamics... Read more

User's Review: A Sparkling Jewel in the Crown of Classical Music  Often referred to as Tchaikovsky’s finest ballet score, Sleeping Beauty is undoubtedly gorgeous, spanning three acts and a prologue in majestic, imperial fashion. This recording is arguably the best in current production. Wordsworth is a master in his conducting style; more so than most other recordings, he draws out the majestic crescendos and decrescendos in the style that one would think Tchaikovsky originally intended... DOHNANYI: Serenade for String Trio / Sextet

User's Review: Sharp and to the point  Bought this because I heard the trio played at a concert. Dohnanyi was new to me but I am sure will be up there with my favourites soon. The trio is very well played with the almost hysterical looseness of the score being kept within bounds without losing the exuberance of the music... Read more

User's Review: Pure Springs  I listened to the Bartók portion of this album on Naxos before purchasing 6 of the tracks from this collection to use as examples for a paper I was writing on the ways Bartók used intervallic material from folk melodies to compose a setting for that melody (via pitch cells, symmetry, and vertical sonorities based on derived scales). All the Bartók pieces on the album clearly state the folk melodies they are based on, so it is really fun to listen to the source material juxtaposed with the compositions... Read more

User's Review: Iconic South African jazz duo documented  Recorded in Ludwigsburg in 1979, this album represents a meeting of two iconic South African jazz musicians, who had to make careers for themselves outside South Africa due to the political circumstances prevailing in the country at the time. Comprising three original compositions by the pianist Abdullah Ibrahim and a reharmonised version of the classic Mackay Davashe tune "Lakutshon'ilanga," the music sounds very different from American jazz...
