Commotio is one of the UK’s foremost chamber choirs, formed in August 1999 to perform primarily lesser known material of the 20th and 21st centuries. Matthew Berry, the co-founder and conductor of the choir, enthusiastically promotes the work of a younger generation of composers, as well as bringing to the fore rarely performed works of more established writers. In 2009 the choir recorded Luminosity, a CD of works by James Whitbourn, for Naxos (8.572103). The disc reached No 2 in the Specialist Classical Charts. The choir had previously recorded a CD of works by South African composer, Peter Klatzow, and a CD featuring works for cello and choir. One track from the latter, Richard Allain’s a cappella work Ubi caritas, has been on the Classic FM playlist for over three years. Recent commissions include works by Richard Allain, Edward Cowie, John Duggan and Francis Pott. The choir toured Slovenia in September 2011, collaborating with their great friend, composer Ambrož Čopi.
