Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus

The Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus was established by Jessamine E. Long in 1937 as the Buffalo Schola Cantorum. She was succeeded in 1945 by Cameron Baird, under whose baton, the Chorus became known as the leading choral ensemble in Western New York. He was followed by a number of distinguished music directors, including Willis Page, Joseph Wincenc, Robert Beckwith, Melvin Strauss, Frederick Burgomaster, and Peter Perret. For two decades, from 1979 until his death in 2001, Thomas Swan led the Chorus through a period of extraordinary growth. He was succeeded by Dale Adelmann, followed by L. Brett Scott, who prepared the Chorus for the recorded performance of Shining Brow. Doreen Rao was appointed Music Director in 2008. The Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus appears at various locations throughout Western New York and performs frequently with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. In celebration of its fiftieth anniversary season a Te Deum was commissioned from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Dominick Argento. In 1999 the Chorus presented the world première of Peace Requiem by Persis Vehar, and in December 2000 it gave a performance of Handel's Messiah with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on National Public Radio, under the direction of JoAnn Falletta.
