Playing a golden-toned 10-course lute and using original manuscript sources or his own sensitive reconstructions, British lutenist Nigel North presents a delightful recital of dances by Robert Johnson, a contemporary of Shakespeare for whose plays he wrote songs and incidental music. Although they use the old forms of pavan, galliard, almain and fantasie, Johnson’s exquisite works tend towards the more expansive, lyrical style that would later flourish in the Baroque period. Nigel North’s critically acclaimed boxed set of Dowland’s Complete Lute Music is also available (8.504016).

Gorgeous 10 course lute
Review By WH99400,March 2011

Nigel North, a lutenist from Britain, does a phenomenal job on these 17 pieces by Robert Johnson (c. 1583-1633). These pieces have a bit of a Baroque feel to them, and are exquisitely played by Mr. North. Not only is it a delightful piece, but Mr. more....

Nigel North-“Robert Johnson: The Prince’s Almain”- NAXOS

Lute virtuoso Nigel North has recorded a collection of dances by Robert Johnson, a contemporary of Shakespeare for whose plays he wrote songs and incidental music. Performing on a ten-course lute, the music presented here is from manuscript sources. Fortunately, Johnson’s music was popular enough among his contemporaries that some of his songs were adapted for keyboard instruments; two of the pieces in this collection only exist in keyboard arrangements and have been “re-set” for the lute by Mr. North.

As with his previous recording of the complete lute music of John Dowland (also available on the Naxos label), Mr. North combines a scholar’s understanding with a virtuoso musician’s skill, to provide a more....
