Loris (Lykourgos) Margaritis was a distinguished Greek composer, performer and music-educator. He cultivated a spirit of ‘music-universalism’, reinvestigating the delicate balance between German Romanticism, French Impressionism and Modernism in his multi-layered music. The varied, highly individual pieces on this recording often possess a dreamlike, nostalgic, timeless quality which Schumann or Debussy would have appreciated. An enthusiastic advocate of Margaritis’s music, Felix Petyrek composed many piano works, including the Six Greek Rhapsodies, which use local scales and structural principles.

Spririted music from a young composer
Review By JD84715,January 2010

An interesting introduction to a little known but exciting composer. These works were all from the composer's early forray into composition. Well played by Petyrek.

Review By Albert Muhlbock, American Record Guide,January 2011

The performance by Apostolos Palios shows great dynamic range, clarity, and musical fervor especially appropriate for the passionate music of his fellow-countryman. He also manages to make the involved harmonic idiom of Margaritis’s later works interesting and exciting.

Review By Laima, WRUV Reviews,September 2010

Piano pieces either written by Greek composer Margaritis or with Greek folk elements by Austrian Petyrek. With influences by Schumann and impressionism, very lyrical. Play all!
