Sturm und Drang in Sweden

Joseph Martin Kraus was one of a handful of talented immigrant composers who came to King Gustavus III’s court and made a great contribution to Swedish musical life in the late 18th century. Kraus was a true polymath who, in addition to being a top-notch composer, wrote a book of poetry, a tragedy, voluminous correspondence and a musical treatise that was closely associated with the Sturm und Drang movement in literature. His musical training began at the age of 12 when received training from members of the Mannheim court orchestra.

The Mannheim school and the music of Gluck and Haydn (both of whom Kraus met during travels to Vienna) influenced the composer and his symphonies certainly bear the mark of their influence. Kraus wrote fifteen symphonies and twelve of them are more....

German composer, Joseph Kraus, born at Miltenberg, grew up in Buchen, 20 km away, in a small country town lying between Frankfurt and Stuttgart. He was provided with a good grounding in musical education from the age of 12 by members of the Mannheim Kapelle for five years. Perhaps his years of university days at Mainz were wasted in studying Philosophy and Law rather than music.

While some of these performances are not as snappy and alert as those for Naxos by Petter Sundkvist and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, they still pack a punch. Ehrhardt’s reading of the Sinfonia da chiesa is superb as he grasps its near Brucknerian sense of architectonics and his Symphonie funèbre is appropriately grim, hushed, restrained, and patient…The early digital recordings are still fine, though a bit warmer than is the standard for Kraus, though that’s not a bad thing at all. The final factor on the Phoenix Edition reissue—and this may well be the determinant one for many consumers—is that the two discs are being sold for the price of one; while these do not constitute all of Kraus’ symphonies, it is a
