Jimmy Blanton who died at 23 shortly after these classic recordings were made was the first modern bass player to pluck the strings (“pizzicato") and to use the bow for melodic and harmonic effects. He was also capable of dazzling eighth- and sixteenth-note runs that are now part of the everyday vocabulary of today’s virtuoso players. The Duke famously said, “it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing.” Blanton, in addition to his never-heard-before skills as a string player, drove the rhythm section with Duke on piano and Sonny Greer on drums. The band really swings as few bands of the time did.

Historians today honor his memory by calling this group in which Jimmy only played for two years before his untimely death, the Webster-Blanton band. Ben Webster played more....
