Complementing his highly praised Naxos series of Turina’s piano music, Jordi Masó joins Eva León to present Turina’s two violin sonatas, the first enriching Classical form with Romantic fantasy, the second notable for its happy blend of the traditional, the descriptive and the personal. Euterpe conjures up the joyful festivities of the composer’s native city, Seville, while the Opus 28 Fantasia is a key work of Spanish chamber music. The Classical Variations dazzlingly transform a sorrowful theme into a Cuban guajira, seguidillas, a tango and virtuoso zapateado.

Two sparkling young Spanish musicians do a nice job of chanelling the melodies and textures conjured for violin and piano by composer Joaquín Turina (1882–1949). Two sonatas are part of this piece-work disc that richly evokes the rhythms and dances of the Iberian peninsula. Violinist Eva León has a mesmerizingly silken touch.

Violinists have been missing a feast of gorgeous music by ignorance of Turina’s music, though purists might take exception to the use of the title ‘sonata’. Composed, with one exception, in the 1920s and 30s, this one disc contains almost all of the music Turina composed for the instrument. Lightweight and almost salon music, the sonatas are full of the most catchy and scrumptious melodies that are sure to bring a smile to your face. Both are fashioned in a conventional three movement format, but are really short cameos that require the silky smooth, creamy tone produced by the young violinist, Eva León.
