Wonderful words
Review By NS94944,May 2012

The Martins, who did any number of English translations for the Met, did an excellent job (perhaps impossible job) in attempting to capture the spirit of this witty libretto. The singers, most of whom were America born came to prominence during the Second World War. Munsel, Rita Stevens, Merill, Pearce, were all first-rate artists, but they were soon to be overshadowed by the European stars who were to appear in New York after the war.

This is a joyous performance conducted by Reiner and a New York pickup orchestra that included the great oboist Robert Bloom. For those who do not know German this is an excellent introduction to one of the great masterpieces of the opera repertoire. You can move on to Carlos Kleiber and Von Karajan, but this one is a lot of fun, more....
