To Recognise a Classic Performance

In his lifetime Sir Adrian Boult never perhaps enjoyed quite the esteem which at last is being accorded him; in those days many preferred his more showy contemporary, Sargeant. And never perhaps was this belated esteem better deserved than in his direction of this symphony. The circumstances of the symphony's background is still vivid to those alive at the tim, coming as it did after the foreboding rasp of his 4th: at last in 1943 the tide of WW2 had reached its lowest ebb and begun to turn; it was possible again that, after all, there just might 'always be an England'.

The soft horn calls, followed by the gentle flow, becoming a surge, of the opening strings at the outset of the first movement conjured up this immortal England - the England of its countryside, of 'Morte more....
