Bargain Bartok from Solti

I was honestly surprised when I saw this album because I never realised that Solti had recorded Bartok and Kodaly earlier in his career. On several other download websites this album is much more expensive, so I was very glad that it was available here!

It never ceases to amaze me how good the sound is on these 1950s mono recordings, which are full of detail and vibrancy. So are the performances, in which Solti shows a tender side for which he was not always given sufficient credit during his long career. The faster sections fizz furiously, but there is genuine atmosphere in the slower pieces.

I only wish that Decca would re-release Solti's 1960s recording of the Music for strings, percussion and celesta - they've released all his other Bartok with the LSO more....
