Review By Penguin Guide,January 2009

The Toccata from 1957 has much of the same vitality and rhythmic flair as the symphonies, and the wild clarinet solos we recall in the Second Symphony resurface here, calling to mind the Danse générale from Daphnis et Chloé. The Fifth Symphony (1956) is a three-movement work, exuberant and full of spirit, and as expertly fashioned as most of Creston’s music. Out of the Cradle and the Partita are early and of lesser interest. Creston may not be as gifted, but readers who respond to Barber and Copland will find themselves at home in Creston’s world. Splendid performances and recording.
