Gloria Coates is one of the most startlingly individual figures on the contemporary music scene, and the most prolific female symphonist in history. Her Symphony No. 15, the newest and most ambitious work on this recording, is subtitled Homage to Mozart, and is full of the otherworldly sounds and textures that have become Coates’s trademark. Transitions for chamber orchestra makes an interesting comparison with the Symphony. One can hear here the same overlay of glissandos and tonal chorales, but in a more stripped-down chamber context. Coates’s vocal music, such as her early work Cantata da Requiem, tends to be somewhat different, more lyrical and less concerned with masses of texture.

N’allez surtout pas vous imaginer que la Quinzième symphonie de Gloria Coates (écrite en 2005), sous-titrée Hommage à Mozart, va vous dérouler de la littérature néoclassique ; Coates propose au contraire un langage contemporain vraiment nouveau ; elle reste la reine incontestée du glissando orchestral, des harmonies vagues alternant avec des déclarations musicales très tranchées, dans un monde sonore mystérieux, inquiétant, d’une noire sensualité, au pouls lent mais inexorable. Ajoutez à cela une écriture franchement chorale, par moments, ainsi qu’une science orchestrale assez époustouflante, et vous obtiendrez… le droit de savoir

Non moins inquiétant, la Cantata da Requiem reprend des textes allemands et anglais soulignant les horreurs de la Seconde guerre mondiale, du point de vue d’une jeune veuve de guerre. Seuls les derniers accords apportent un soupçon de soleil, dans un étonnant tapis d’accords tonaux qui tranchent sérieusement avec le piano délibérément désaccordé que l’on peut entendre auparavant. Voilà une superbe œuvre contemporaine de 1972, au souffle intense, que l’on aimerait entendre en concert sous nos latitudes.

Pour finir, Transitions de 1984, encore un subtil mélange de glissandos en dehors de toute tonalité, contrastant avec un discours d’accords qui rappellent de plus en plus clairement. « When I am Laid » de Didon et Enée de Purcell. Très inquiétant, très beau, très moderne, très intemporel…

Ni avant-gardiste, ni postmoderne, ni néoromantique, Coates développe une musique absolument personnelle. Coates serait-elle l’une des futures grandes figures de la composition de notre temps ? Sans doute. © Abeille Musique

Radikal modern und klanglich attraktiv: Gloria Coates’ “Homage to Mozart” ist nicht nur was für verquaste Intellektuellenohren. Die Herleitung von Mozart entzieht sich zwar dem gewöhnlichen Sterblichen, aber die Klänge sind absolut beeindruckend.

Those who have been following Gloria Coates’ symphonic cycle being released on Naxos will know what to expect from the Fifteenth and most recent symphony completed in 2005. There are the expected growling basses that open the work topped off with a slow moving rhythmic pattern, while the second movement has one of her now familiar long slow sliding passages that passes through the orchestra with a growing dynamic. There is one brief moment in the opening movement when we arrive at a tonal chord which may signify a major change in her outlook. The third movement predictably has her oft used military feel in its rhythmic structure. The whole work is short in duration at twenty-two minutes, but manages to embrace most of the ideas we have frequently heard in previous symphonies.
