Review By Penguin Guide,January 2009

Volume 3 plunges into rare Rodrigo: in the jolly Concerto in modo galante, written in 1949 for cellist Cassadó, Rodrigo’s easy-going manner has an 18th-century Spanish spirit. The Concierto como un divertimento, written in 1981, is another agreeable cello concerto, peppered with all sorts of Spanishry and brightly orchestrated; the slow movement features the cello paling against flute, clarinet and celesta, creating a very pleasing effect. Rodrigo looked to Vivaldi (in structural form, at least), in his Concierto de estío for violin and orchestra: the two lively outer movements are separated by an especially attractive central Siciliana adagio. The Cançoneta for Violin and String Orchestra is short and pleasurable.
