This is Volume 2 of the first recording of Falla’s complete piano music, including juvenilia and all his piano transcriptions of his own orchestral works, as well as pieces written expressly for the instrument. The early compositions included here, Cancíon, Vals-Capricho, Cortejo de los gnomos and Mazurca, are clearly the work of an exceptional student, although they are written very much in a Romantic vein which Falla would later abandon, in favour of the overt nationalism that marks his mature work. For the Suite from El sombrero de tres picos (The Three Cornered Hat), Daniel Ligorio has edited the composer’s sketches and unfinished transcription in order to achieve an effect closer to the orchestral version.

Review By Phil Vendy,Fine Music,March 2008

The first volume of de Falla’s piano music was such a delight; I could hardly wait to hear this. Ligorio has proved himself to be a most sensitive interpreter of the Spanish composer. …we come to a state of exquisite awareness as each little piece of magic unfolds. Ligorio has himself edited and enhanced the sketches left by de Falla, much to his own credit in making this work so accessible and providing the CD booklet notes. If you are in need of an antidote to the increasing complexity and volume built into today’s music, then this charming Cd and its companion volume may be just what you are looking for.

Review By David Denton, Naxos,May 2007

As I commented when reviewing the first in this two disc series of piano music by Manuel de Falla, his place in today's concert repertoire resides in two colourful ballets and the piano concerto, Nights in the Garden of Spain. Though he was a highly productive composer, his output for solo piano was modest, this second disc largely relying on works from his youth and transcriptions of his ballet music. Even from his youngest years, as we hear in Cancion and Cortejo de los gnomes, he had already fallen under the spell of the French school of composition and particularly influenced by Debussy, but as pastiche they are charming and tuneful scores. There is much more of his personality in the Fantasia betica, his major work for the instrument composed
