Born in the same year as Mozart, Kraus was dubbed the ‘Swedish Mozart’, but these lively symphonies, freshly performed by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, suggest that his music has mor in common with that of Haydn (who praised his music highly), above all in the Sturm und Drang period. Kraus was drawn to the minor keys (especially the Symphony in C sharp minor and the Symphonie funèbre), and the tough streak in his writing is emphasized by the sharpness of syncopated rhythms. The major-key symphonies are marginally less striking, although Allegros still have plenty of vitality.
