Review By Penguin Guide,January 2009

John Ardoin speaks of Furtwängler’s 1937 Fifth Symphony as ‘a performance of the greatest brilliance and clarity, with incisive attacks, fewer extremes of dynamics and tempo, and despite its fire and fury, more classically controlled that the earlier Polydor or the second EMI version of 1954’.

Review By Penguin Guide,January 2009

Even those who did not respond to Furtwängler (like the composer Robert Simpson) admired the sheer power and eloquence of his Wagner. These excerpts have wonderful breadth and eloquence. They provide a valuable component of this great conductor’s discography.
