Due edizioni fondamentali che non dovrebbero mancare nella discoteca di un vero segueace del grande Gutav. Il romantic « moralista » (second Klemperer) Walter, fermato nel momento di massima ispirazione (1945), regala una Quarta di grande equilibrio interpretative che è capace di esprimere tutte le sfaccettature espressive del lavoro, mentre il folle e personalissimo Mengelberg si dimontra supremo dominatore di un’ orchestra (a tutt’oggi straordinaria nella musica mahleriana) con la qular osa l’inimmaginabile per quanto riguarda la libertà di fraseggio e di agogica, senza mai perdere di vista il senso complessivo della struttura.
