Review By Penguin Guide,January 2009

Tim Hugh gives a superb reading of Britten’s Cello Symphony, strong and purposeful, making light of the formidable technical demands and the gritty double-stopping, with lyrical moments standing out. Rebecca Hirsch gives a spacious reading of the Violin Concerto, her tone clear and fresh rather than warmly romantic. The scherzando writing of the middle movement sis full of fun, and the elegiac close of the finale is made poignant by understatement. Full, clear recording, with timpani specially vivid.

Review By Malcolm Hayes,Classic FM,October 1999

"A very different product of the war years was the Britten Violin Concerto, completed in Canada in 1939 and featuring , along with his later Cello Symphony, on a fine disc from Naxos. Noth works, among Britten's finest, are also among his darkest. The Violin Concerto combines a serious technical challenge for the soloist with a poignant anti-virtuoso manner that's startlingly original. Rebecca Hirsch plays it with power, loveliness and fine command of some of the more appalling difficulties. In the Cello Symphony, written for Rostropovich, Tim Hugh has fearsome competition from the Russian master himself, and Julian Lloyd Webber, but the strength and intelligence of his playing hold their own well, as do the BBC Scottish Symphony Orhcestra's accompaniment under Takuo Yuasa.
