Of the two performances here, Jeremy Summerly’s account is undoubtedly the more eloquently serene; it is beautifully controlled and modulated, rather after the fashion of the famous Willcocks/King’s College accounts of the Byrd Masses. The harmonic pungencies are cleanly presented but unexaggerated and—compared with Hillier—the music’s lines, although by no means bland, flow in relative tranquility. The singers apparently experimented freely with plicas (notational signs indicating some kind of ornament).
