The concertos on the second disc are full of surprises, and Roberto Baraldi gives them the strongest profile. He is a very positive soloist, with a bolder sound image than Martini, which is not to say he is in the least insensitive. He likes to echo phrases, followed by the orchestra. His strength of purpose is especially telling in the Posthorn Concerto which features octave rhythmic figures on B flat, and also just right for the D minor Concerto, RV 241. But perhaps the most striking work here is the F major, RV 292, where the six-minute first movement interpolates a slow central section and is virtually a miniature concerto in itself. The E major Concerto goes one further with four tempo changes, Allegro-Adagio-Largo-Allegro, while the
