Karol Stryja succeeds in getting plenty of atmosphere into No. 3 ... this is the best stereo Symphonie Concertante
Szymanowski has that fastidious ear for texture and heightened sense of vision that distinguish mystics, and nowhere is atmosphere more potent than in the Third Symphony, the Song of the Night.
Stryja’s set of the Song of the Night and the Fourth Symphony offers a well-filled disc that is worth its asking price. He uses a tenor in the Third Symphony and Taduesz Zmudzinski is an effective soloist in the Fourth Symphony or Sinfonia concertante for piano and orchestra. The performance of the Straussian and derivative Concert Overture is as good, in the remaining pieces rather less impressive but still acceptable.
