In their originality, concentration and breadth of expression, the Polonaises of Johann Bach’s first-born son, Wilhelm Friedemann, establish him as a composer worthy to be measured against his father. Arguably his most significant compositions, these eloquent, poetic and technically demanding works pioneered the expansion and ultimately the emancipation of the tonal system. The Sonata in D major, Wilhelm Friedemann’s “Opus One”, was the work with which he first presented himself to the public in published form. Both in its expressive aims and the technical demands it makes on the player, the work poses levels of difficulty very rarely seen in eighteenth-century keyboard music.

Review By Penguin Guide,January 2009

Wilhelm Friedemann was the oldest (and favourite) son of Bach: the first book of the ‘48’ was written for him. He combined rich melodic invention and originality of harmony with a highly personal expressive style and these are much in evidence in the Polonaises. In this admirable recording, the American scholar Robert Hill uses a reconstruction of a Florentine fortepiano of 1720 in the manner of Bartolomeo Cristofori. His playing has great flair and style and it makes out the strongest case for this interesting and individual master. Excellent recorded sound too.
