Excellent performances from Scherbakov

Medtner is my current obsession so I've been trying to get hold of as many performances as possible of his music. The 3 Piano Concertos are some of my favourite music, and there are some excellent performances available. Tozer recorded all 3 concertos for Chandos as part of his (almost complete) review of Medtner's music, while Hyperion went for a combination of Alexeev (Piano Concerto No.1) & Demidenko (Piano Concerto No.2 & No.3). There are also Medtner's own peerless recordings as well, dating from the late 1940's.

I have a number of other CD's of Scherbakov (Liapunov's Transcendental Etudes & 8 CD's of Godowsky's piano music) and he hasn't disappointed me yet, so I was very much looking forward to these recordings.

My general feeling: 1st & 3rd Piano more....

Konstantin Scherbakov is highly sympathetic and offers very musical playing. He strikes us as more imaginative and subtle in both his range of dynamics and diversity of colour than any of his rivals. True, Geoffrey Tozer (Chandos) has the finer recording, but taken all round Scherbakov would make an eminently satisfactory first choice: artistically it is impeccable, as a recording it is very natural and well balanced and, not least, the price is right.
