The B flat Sonata has been called ‘a comfortable and domestic’ version of Beethoven’s Hammerklavier. However, Benjamin Frith is so persuasive that he dispels this impression. His playing is nothing less than a delight, and in the celebrated Rondo capriccioso and the more conventional Variations in E flat of 1841 he is as light out touch as one could possibly wish.
