Orlando Gibbons
Review By BO69041,May 2014

The recently released TV series by Dr. David Starkey "British music and monarchy" introduced me to Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) appointed organist at the Chapel Royal by James I in 1615. A very versatile composer in a period of English history when music in the court and the church was able to flourish.

I found "GIBBONS: Choral and Organ Music" an excellent introduction to Gibbons' marvelous work.

Review By BBC Radio 3,September 1996

"This is an excellent disc, all of Gibbons and is highly recommendable for those who like their Anglican church music well mannered and manicured."

Review By Classic CD,September 1996

"The choir impresses with some beautifully controlled but expressive singing under Jeremy Summerly's direction and Laurence Cummings is the sensitive organist in three of Gibbons's organ works. Excellent sound..."

Review By Gramophone,August 1996

"...a welcome addition to the programme. At a budget price, this CD is worth every penny."

Review By Penguin Guide,January 2009

Using his small professional choir, 12 singers at most, and often fewer, Jeremy Summerly directs fresh, finely focused readings of an outstanding collection of Gibbons’s anthems. This may not have so much of the ecclesiastical aura of a traditional cathedral performance with boys’ voices, but it amply makes up in clarity and incisiveness for any lack of weight and warmth. That is particularly so in the six magnificent unaccompanied full anthems which are included, where the astonishing harmonic clashes and progressions in the counterpoint come out with wonderful impact, generally with just a single voice per part.
