This Naxos coupling can be strongly recommended on all counts, quite irrespective of cost, Bernd Glemser and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra give an outstanding account of Tchaikovsky’s underrated G major Concerto, flamboyant and poetic turns. The unnamed orchestra principal cellist introduces the Andante gently and tenderly and his two string colleagues join him with equal sensitivity. The finale has plenty of sparkle and gusto and the whole account is very enjoyable indeed.
The Concerto Fantasy too, is treated as a large-scale work. Both pianist and orchestra play it with total conviction, and much virtuosity (the cadenza very impressive). The Contrasts of the second movement are most tellingly, made, with the lyrical minor key cantabile touching, and the Russian dance element as vigorous as one could wish. Excellent, well-balanced, full-bodied recording.
