Fantasia
Review By ZC70042,September 2009

I had a recording of a young Greek pianist playing the Fantasia - brilliant technically but this version has really captured the feeling of the piece.

I recently heard Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 2 on my car radio and was amazed that I had never noticed how exceptionally lovely the second (Andante non troppo) movement is. When I got home, I did what I often do when I hear something that I like on the radio -- I sat down at my laptop and searched for the recording online. This Naxos coupling can be strongly recommended on all counts, quite irrespective of cost, Bernd Glemser and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra give an outstanding account of Tchaikovsky’s underrated G major Concerto, flamboyant and poetic turns. The unnamed orchestra principal cellist introduces the Andante gently and tenderly and his two string colleagues join him with equal sensitivity. The finale has plenty of sparkle and gusto and the whole account is very enjoyable indeed.
