Review By Classic CD,

"There is virtuosity aplenty in the uninhibited outpouring of the Scherzo and Burlesque...this proves another jewel in Naxos's already richly encrusted crown"

Review By Penguin Guide,January 2009

Ilya kaler’s technique is flawless, with playing that is not only brilliant but consistently beautiful tonally. The Second Violin Concerto, the more wayward, more problematic work, is particular fine and Kaler relishes the key role given to the cadenzas. The haunting beauty of the performance may be measured by the gentle cadenza and final ghostly coda of the first movement, leading to a wonderfully rarefied account of the central Adagio and a mercurial, quicksilver one of the finale. If in the better-known First Concerto Kaler’s performance does not quite have the same intensity, that is partly a question of the of the marginally less taut orchestral accompaniment and of the recording balance.
