Magnificently gloomy
Review By jleonard,May 2014

Shostakovich's Symphony No. 14 is a song-cycle for bass and soprano, string orchestra and percussion with eleven songs to words by Lorca, Apollonaire, Küchelbecker and Rilke (all sung in Russian translation). The songs are all concerned with death, especially early and unjust death and imprisonment. They are magnificently gloomy.

This recording has good recorded sound, good orchestral playing and two good vocalists who, though not Russian, seem to have no difficulty with the texts and pronunciation (to my non-Russian-speaking ears). The main disadvantage of this recording (which is why it only gets 4 stars) is that the booklet doesn't have the libretto, so you have to search around the web for the texts and translations.

"The orchestra seems to have a natural affinity for Shostakovich's music"

Review By Penguin Guide,January 2009

Slovák’s  account of No.14 is one of the finest, strongly characterized in each of the 11 contrasted movements with the help of two superb soloist. Mikuláš is just as strong and individual as in No.13, and Hajóssyová, with her frim, Slavoni mezzo, is equally idiomatic. Regularly, Slovák and his performers bring out the menace behind the composer’s inspiration on the theme of death, with the fourth song, ‘The Suicide’, particularly moving in its tenderness. The booklet gives a summary of each poem, but no texts or translations. Full, immediately sound.
