Naxos provide an attractive cross-section of Lawes’s instrumental music, using an all-viol texture for the string parts in the Consorts (with organ where appropriate). The group also include a fascinatingly bravura set of Divisions for Viols and Organ on the same Pavane which opens the four-part Sett in G minor. The pieces for two lutes could have been given more lively projection, although they are well enough played. The excellent balance helps to make this inexpensive sampler recommendable, which readers might well try.
