York Bowen was described by Saint-Saëns as ‘the most remarkable of the young British composers’. His 24 Preludes form a sequence of concise, richly expressive and directly communicative studies. The Berceuse, Op. 83 ranks amongst Bowen’s most intimate scores, while the sophisticated Suite Mignonne demands the most delicate of touches from the pianist.

A very subtle Bowen
Review By AW148184,April 2014

Bowen's complete command of keyboard techniques and understanding of the instrument itself enabled him to give each of his preludes a very distinctive character. His harmonic language is very unique and unmistakably "Bowenian": modulations are bold but never forceful; dissonances are daring but never disruptive to the ears. He also has endless resources of melodic materials. Listen to the jazzy, soulful D minor No. 6, or the B-Flat No. 21 where the Griegian opening only soon to be transformed seamlessly into Bowen's own lush, fairy-tale like world. On the opposite end, pianists playing these preludes are never short on opportunities to showcase their virtuosity. No. 18 in G-sharp minor will certainly give Rachmaninoff a run for his money; No. 22 in B-flat minor makes one wonder if more....
