Philip Entremont’s performances of Tchaikovsky’s two major string works string works communicate above all a feeling of passionate thrust and energy. After the ardour of the Elégie, the finale steals in persuasively, with dance-rhyrhms bracing and strong. The Souvenier de Florence has comparable momentum and eagerness. The dashing main theme of the first movement swings along infectiously, while the wistful secondary idea also takes wind. Entremont brings out the charm in writing inspired by Russian folksong. The VCO are committed, persuasive advocates to make one wonder why the Souvenir does not have a more central place in the sting repertoire.
