Too Calming
Review By jleonard,September 2014

Christopher Ball writes in an English pastoral idiom, although, befitting his career with early music groups, he also uses Renaissance-type themes on occasions. The works on this disc are very well written, tuneful and very calming. They are also beautifully played and recorded.

However, I found them a little too calming and peaceful, I think that the music of English pastoral school depends for much of its effect on what is left unspoken, the contrast between it and the contemporary experience of the First World War, for example, as in Vaughan Williams’ Pastoral Symphony. Although these works are very beautiful they need a little more bite and a little more tension to be recommended.
