Review By Steve Smith,Time Out New York,December 2013

Best classical music of 2013 : #5

English composer Benjamin conducted a superb cast in the premiere recording of his latest opera, a dramatically gripping, gloriously colorful and universally acclaimed work seemingly destined for standard-repertoire status. © 2013 Time Out New York

Review By Stephen Plaistow,Gramophone,December 2013

George Benjamin’s Written on Skin, with a text by Martin Crimp, reaffirmed that – as long as the text has freshness and power and makes space for music to bring something new – opera can still be an art of and for our time, telling stories on the lyric stage. In Benjamin’s most ambitious work to date, the drama inhabits a hybrid territory in which the 21st century bleeds through into a medieval tale of cannibalism, suicide, sex and murder. © Gramophone

Review By David Threasher,Gramophone,December 2013

George Benjamin’s Written on Skin has already been hailed as one of the three most important operas of the century. I don’t know about that, but it was a uniquely compelling and (as Arnold Whittall noted in his review of the disc) disconcerting experience at Covent Garden in March. The recording is a vital memento of the work’s Aix premiere. © Gramophone
