Hugues Dufourt clearly belongs among the masters and these two recent works vastly demonstrate his mastery gained over so many long years. The music is complex and must be quite taxing for the performers. It remains strongly expressive so that it is likely to appeal to anyone “with ears to hear” especially when served by such first-class performances as it receives in this superbly engineered and produced release up to Timpani’s highest standards.

This new Timpani disc presents two contrasting products of Dufourt’s engagement with the visual arts: a work loosely based on Jackson Pollock’s Lucifer, from 2000, and Voyage par-delà les fleuves et les monts…Both are imposing half-hour orchestral slabs that may seem rather impenetrable upon a first hearing, but for those willing to take the plunge, there are all manner of discoveries to be made here.

Quelque peu en retrait, comme Roger Tessier, par rapport à certaines des autres figures historiques du courant spectral (Grisey, Levinas, Murail), Hugues Dufourt (né en 1943) n’en poursuit pas moins une œuvre remarquable, dont de précédents et importants jalons furent Erewhon et Saturne. Pour ce deuxième disque que Pierre-André Valade et l’Orchestre philharmonique du Luxembourg lui consacrent chez Timpani, on le retrouve dans son champ d’expérimentation favori, l’orchestre qui, selon lui, «reste encore notre meilleur synthétiseur », mais aussi pour reprendre les termes de la notice lumineuse de Martin Kaltenecker, offre une matière avec lequel sa
