GRAMMY®-Award winners in 2009, The King’s Singers are one of the world’s most celebrated ensembles. Their programming concept in this disc is unique: built upon the individual clauses of The Lord’s Prayer, beginning and ending in plainchant, it ranges over the centuries to explore the spiritually charged text. Chant is at the heart of the programme, and each composer’s setting illuminates the others, shedding rich interpretative light on the poetic and devotional aspects of the prayer.

Very fine voices, great album!

Who sings well, prays twice
Review By JD88992,November 2012

Forty years on, there can be few areas of vocal music unexplored by the King's Singers, from Janequin to the Beatles (as their one album title has it), singing a cappella all over the world, though this may be the first time the six gents have recorded in the States. As the group originally spun off one of the great British chapel choirs, it's no surprise that they are quite at home in sacred music, and their latest disc is based on the most famous of all prayers.

The program begins and ends with the early chant setting of the words; the complete prayer is set by six different composers, and other selections are chosen to relate to individual lines of the text. ("Give us this day our daily bread," for example, leads to Palestrina's "I am the Living Bread"). Of course the more....

King's Singers interpret Our Father Settings
Review By EE115671,December 2012

The much-heralded British sextet The King’s Singers bring an interpretation of The Lord’s Prayer, phrase by phrase, for comparison of composers, style, and period. The clear voices and exceptional balance presented a capella establish the mood of this prayer and invite comparisons from both amateurs and professionals.

While this is a scholarly construct with verses presented section by section, the solemnity and devotion of the supplicant is conveyed with each selection. The perfectly-pitched voices blend seamlessly, phrases are clearly expressed, and words are enunciated carefully so that the audience can follow if desired. On the CD, titles of the tracks are helpfully provided for the student following each track, despite a few misspellings. With all parts sung by these more....

Review By Charles E Brewer, American Record Guide,March 2013

The six singers adroitly move between renaissance polyphony by Palestrina, Byrd, Lassus, and Hassler and the more contemporary styles of Francis Poulenc and William Harris, with a brief sidetrip to the Edwardian period with Charles Wood. This release continues the high standards of interpretation expected from The King’s Singers…interesting and well-designed program. © 2013 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Review By Jerónimo Marín, Ritmo,February 2013

© 2013 Ritmo

There are few vocal ensembles that can work up a concept album like The King’s Singers, and this…blossoms into something rather wonderful as they are grouped into sections commenting on aspects of the Lord’s Prayer…The performances have all the panache that we associate with this group. © 2012 BBC Music Magazine

Review By Ivan March, Gramophone,December 2012

…this enterprising collection by the King’s Singers chooses settings of individual chants ranging over six centuries of Christian church music…Stravinsky’s Pater noster is a surprise…John Tavener’s The Lord’s Prayer is very beautiful indeed, a real highlight…But the delight of the set is Poulenc’s rich harmonies, both pure and smoochy…Find out for yourselves what a rewarding CD this is, gloriously sung and perfectly recorded. © 2012 Gramophone

The CD…is exceptionally well sung…This is certainly a CD for a highly specialized audience—one interested in top-notch choral singing, in multiple interpretations of religious messages, and in unexpected and aurally challenging differences in the sound and structure of works on similar topics. © 2012 Infodad.com Read complete review
