Although Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari is known mainly for his operatic compositions (La vedova scaltra is available on Naxos CD 8.660225–26 and DVD 2.110234–35), he wrote a number of sublimely expressive and lyrical orchestral works, devoting the majority of his time in later life to composing instrumental music. The three delightfully melodic, rhythmically buoyant and, at times elegiac works featured on this recording represent his complete wind concerto output.

Wind concertos
Review By BH125777,December 2013

Most music lovers will know something of Wolf-Ferrari's delightful operas if only the orchestral excerpts but they would surely love the lovely melodies found in those. So if you listen to the 3 concertinos in this disc you will immediately recognise the songful style and the catchy rhythms. It was a revelation for me to discover these works. Thanks to the ever searching Naxos. All the soloists were unknown to me but I cannot imagine the works ever being better played. The recording is superb. This disc is irresistible.

Review By Merlin Patterson, Fanfare,January 2013

This music is pure delight! These three works are tuneful, well constructed, and concisely developed solo vehicles for instruments that rarely get the spotlight to themselves.

The Idillio for oboe and the Suite for bassoon…are filled with joyful, exuberant music that dances gracefully on the ear. Each also possesses a beautiful slow movement. The Concertino for English horn…is a bit more somber and melancholy. Though it contains three rapturous slow movements, it still has enough virtuosity to allow the soloist to show off his technical prowess.
