As in other releases in this series, Kitajenko allows the music to breathe, and I have found this increasingly impressive on repeated listening. For the finely played excerpts from The Snow Maiden, the orchestra was recorded in a studio with excellent results, too. The symphony seems to derive from more than one performance and apart from very quiet rustling between the movements, the audience is not noticeable.

Dmitrij Kitajenko’s Tchaikovsky disc…is a (++++) recording, well-paced and beautifully played…Kitajenko takes this movement, and indeed the whole symphony, as written, allowing its lovely melodies plenty of time to flow and taking the second movement as a true Adagio cantabile, giving listeners an expansive portrayal of a vast Russian landscape. This is a glowing performance, with the excerpts from The Snow Maiden providing a pleasant complement to the symphony and a chance to hear parts of one of Tchaikovsky’s less-known works. © 2012 Infodad.com Read complete review

Après Chostakovitch (Capriccio) et Prokofiev (Phoenix Edition), Dimitri Kitajenko (né en 1940) et l’Orchestre du Gürzenich de Cologne, dont il est, comme Günter Wand, chef honoraire (depuis 2009) bien que n’en ayant jamais été, quant à lui, Kapellmeister, se sont lancés chez Oehms Classics dans une intégrale Tchaïkovski. Les Cinquième, Sixième et Manfred étant déjà parues, voici maintenant la Première «Rêves d’hiver», dont l’interprétation lisse et prosaïque, manquant d’allant et de passion, ne captive pas, bien que semble-t-il prise sur le vif. En revanche, comme sous la baguette de son Generalmusikdirektor dans Mahler (voir ici), l’orchestre, servi par une prise de son exemplaire, se présente sous son meilleur jour. Le complément de ce disque qui n’en demeure pas moins court consiste en des extraits de La Fille des neiges, desquels la notice (en allemand et en anglais), par ailleurs correcte, ne pipe mot. Contemporaine de la version définitive de la Première Symphonie, cette musique de scène pour la pièce d’Ostrovski mérite pourtant de sortir de l’oubli, à en juger du moins par ces trois numéros sur les dix-neuf que compte la partition complète, car on y retrouve tout le talent dont le compositeur a su faire preuve par ailleurs dans le domaine du ballet (OC 668). © 2012 ConcertoNet.com
