Playing with pitch perfect finesse
Review By MP124451,December 2012

I bought this download on the strength of Gramophone Magazines recommendation and I bought it for the Berg Concerto, which I knew little about. It is the Beethoven (1806), however, which I have enjoyed best on this album. The cadenza is unusual as it is from Beethoven's piano transcription of this violin concerto. I like it for itself and as a change from the usual cadenza which I have on many other recordings of his concerto. Gentle playing, not dominating the sound stage with precise bowing and a grand scheme of the concerto in Faust's secure hands. What more could one ask? This is supported by wonderful playing by Orchestra Mozart under Maestro Abbado.

The Berg Concerto, written in 1935, upon the death of a good friend, makes great listening with its passion and lament more....

Review By Javier Extremera, Ritmo,March 2013

Review By Stephen Plaistow, Gramophone,October 2012

…Isabelle Faust’s contribution is as personable as one could wish, alive with her own intelligence and musical personality. She projects her role as soloist on an equal footing with the orchestra and excels particularly in the Berg Concerto, a protagonist who carries to perfection its narrative dimension and knows when to merge into the orchestral texture.

The Orchestra Mozart play beautifully and I would say these versions are models of artistic and human discipline… © 2012 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Review By Duncan Druce, Gramophone,March 2012

Berg could be accused of giving too many instructions to his performers, of not allowing enough room for individual interpretation….Isabelle Faust is required, within a few bars, to characterise her part as scherzando, wienerisch and rustico. She succeeds brilliantly; one feels, in this and other places, that such precision actually helps her to convey the intensity of feeling that lies behind this concerto dedicated ‘to the memory of an angel’.
