Review By Andrew Quint,Fanfare,November 2012

Also on PentaTone, and also an audiophile item, is Carlos Kalmar’s thought-provoking program with the Oregon Symphony. Kalmar leads deeply affecting readings of three 20th-century works with connections to wartime, and pacifist implications: John Adams’s The Wound-Dresser, Benjamin Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem, and Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No. 4. Charles Ives’s The Unanswered Question opens the CD. Can there be any ambiguity as to what question Kalmar is asking? © 2012 Fanfare

Review By John Quinn ,MusicWeb International,July 2012

This is an uncommonly interesting programme and the four pieces that comprise it make a satisfying combination…there is much that binds the works together and the key thing is that the programme is musically satisfying. It’s also extremely well executed: there’s some very fine music making to be experienced here.

The Unanswered Question is given a refined and cultivated reading.

John Adams’ The Wound-Dresser is one of his most thought-provoking pieces. The piece, which is a declamatory soliloquy for the baritone, is surprisingly calm and restrained in tone.
