There’s no question as to Devine’s command of technique and material; the fluidity of his fingering, all the while maintaining clarity of contrapuntal lines and passagework, free of the squeaks and scrapes we often hear on guitar recordings, is a joy to hear, as is the full-bodied tone of his instrument, very well captured in the acoustics of a West Sussex church…soothing, warm-blooded intimacy of a well-played guitar in consistently refined, relaxing performances.

The partita is an amazing tour de force, one of Bach’s most complex keyboard works, yet sounding perfectly natural on the guitar. The suite and the Prelude, Fugue, and Allegro are as fine as Jason Vieaux’s excellent recording…And his Bach-Vivaldi transcription is overflowing with joy.

Graham Anthony Devine’s release is, if possible, even more delightful—in part because of his choice of works. His playing is technically and expressively as fine as Perroy’s, but with a different personality—warmer, friendlier, maybe even a touch more inventive. Perroy evoked awe, Devine smiles.
