Renaissance Jam Session
Review By DM96074,June 2011

A MEETING PLACE – Munir Nurettin Beken & August Denhard – Sono Luminus

With August Denhard on lute and Munir Nerettin Beker on ud, “A Meeting Place” is an exploration of Medieval and Renaissance instrumental music (more than half of it anonymous), with special emphasis given to the historic, improvisatory nature of the different forms.

While the ud is traditionally played with a plectrum and the lute with bare fingers, for this recording Mr. Denhard and Mr. Beken have each employed both techniques on their respective instruments. The results, though sometimes a little uneven, never fail to surprise, especially Mr. Beken’s improvisations; his fretless instrument (designed to accommodate the Arabic 16 tone octave scale) allows him to add an element of exoticism more....

Interesting combination
Review By AB91650,June 2011

On the positive side, I think the two lutenists - both fine players - had an interesting selection of pieces, some very well known, others on the contrary, quite off the beaten track. They perform competently, with obvious enjoyment.

On the negative side, I feel the recording is too focused on Western music, and I am a bit frustrated at not hearing more Oriental stuff, in other words hearing more of Munir's side of the story.

Nonetheless a most enjoyable recording and I hope the two players can further deepen this exciting cross-breeding between East and West.

Review By Ardella Crawford, American Record Guide,September 2011

Most people probably know that an ud (perhaps more often spelled oud) is a Middle Eastern stringed instrument; what they may not know is how much it sounds like a lute or that the two instruments most likely started out from a common ancestor and then developed differently in the East than in the West. In this magnificent program, the musicians play each piece together, and it is difficult to distinguish one instrument from the other.

I have learned a great deal about the ud in recent years since becoming a member of an ensemble which plays traditional music from Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. One of the ensemble members actually makes his own ud, and remarkably beautiful instruments they are indeed. He’s also a former primary school teacher, so each concert we do includes a brief and informative lecture on the history of the ud, and how easy it is to ruin a soundboard just when it’s nearly finished; after hours and hours of painstaking paring and planning.
