The emotional content, lyricism and direct appeal of Gavin Bryars’s music are unique, reflecting a contemporary composer’s absorption and transformation of several centuries of musical craftsmanship in order to reflect his, and our, own epoch. Originally written for harpsichord, After Handel’s Vesper is a strong illustration of Bryars’s post-minimal interests in early music repertoire. Ramble on Cortona, derived from 13th-century music, makes expressive use of the piano’s resonant qualities, while in the highly-coloured, almost impressionistic The Solway Canal, landscapes pass by as if in a dream.

Gateway to Classical
Review By DL116357,March 2011

Thanks mate! I was compelled to purchase his album after hearing Ramble on Cortona. I absolutely fell in love.
I'm sorry I can't leave a more detailed review - this is actually the first Classical album I have ever purchased.
In fact, I rarely find an artist I enjoy well enough to spend money on. I'll definitely keep my eye on your work.

A sense of spacious tranquility in these piano works

His works are truly a radical, unique and undefinable bridge between the worlds of minimalism, new age ambience and jazz, and I have come to love it all!

Many readers may be familiar with his breakthrough work, "The Sinking of the Titanic" or the more recent and fascinating "Cello Concerto". This new CD on the Naxos label features three of Bryars' works for piano. The big one - the one that simply demands careful uninterrupted listening - is his Piano Concerto, "The Solway Canal".

The first piece on the disc is more....

The entire recording is…an informative introduction to an aspect of Bryars’ approach to composition that has received little attention in previous releases, and that introduction is well worth experiencing. © 2013 Examiner.com Read complete review
