These are imaginative scores with tropical colouring and exotic textures, all sounding rather similar in their luxuriance—but who cares! Amazonas is the earliest and most astonishing score, dating from the First World War, and in its vivid sonorities affirms Villa-Lobos’s contention that his first harmony book was the map of Brazil. The Bratislava strings could be more opulent, but the performances under a Brazilian conductor are very good indeed, as in the recording.
