Mass of the Dead  

Brushing up on the chant for a Requiem Mass, this album far surpassed the requirements. The Monks of Solesmes set the standard for a beautiful yet simple interpretation of the chant. The music is easy to listen to, yet quietly moving. Their voices combine so gracefully!

Although the Requiem Mass music tops the bill, the album also includes music from the rest of the Divine Office and the feast of All Saints. I haven't heard the Invitatory Psalm from Matins (track 11) sung before. You would have to get up very early in the morning to catch that one at the monastery.

The recording of the bells (track 21) is a nice touch too. Not necessary, but helps you get a feel of the place.

In conclusion, the album is useful for a choir preparing a Requiem Mass, but more than that it is an enchanting slice of monastic life.
