Moldrup Meets Bach
Erling Moldrup – JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH, THE GUITAR WORKS – Scandinavian Classics
Bach’s music has been adapted and arranged for guitar since at least the beginning of the 20th century; as mentioned in the liner notes, it is now a required study for classical guitar students all over the world. Erling Moldrup performs these fugues, preludes and suites (including the inevitable D minor Chaconne) with all the understanding and precision that one might expect from a Royal Academy professor of guitar. Some of these compositions, notably the Fugue in Am (BMV 1000), are particularly beautifully played.
Sadly, Mr. Moldrup is let down by his recording technicians, with equalization, compression, reverb and volume all varying from track to track, even within suites intended to be heard as complete works. The result is an uneven listening experience where each track sounds as though it was recorded at a different locale or using a different instrument. This is a project that needs (and deserves) to be re-mixed and re-mastered.
Bach’s Complete Guitar Works by Erling Moldrup is recommended for guitar students and fans for the thoroughness of its repertoire, as skillfully interpreted by a master musician and to recording engineering students as an example of what not to do.
For repertoire and musicianship alone, it rates 8 out of 10.
