Smoke-filled songs
Lee Wiley was one of those now almost forgotten cabaret singers of the 1930s and 40s who made the words and sentiments of the song as important as the melody. She knew how to tell a story, often a very sad one. These tunes are amongst the greatest Rodgers & Hart, Gershwin and Cole Porter wrote for the Broadway theater, and Lee tells them, acts them, with great simplicity and sincerity. In addition, Lee was one of the first white singers of songs to back up her performances with a small jazz ensemble, rather in the same style that Billie Holiday made in her classic Teddy Wilson-Lester Young recordings. Close your eyes and imagine you are in smoke-filled nightclub on 52nd Street during the Second World War. Wonderful nostalgia that time has not dated.more....
